The 32x was a introduced late in SEGA's 16-bit days. After the untimely failure of the SEGA-CD, they introduced what was possibly the best console upgrade ever. The 32x upgraded the aging SEGA Genesis to a 32-bit powerhouse, with 2 Hitachi SH-2 processors and wonderful graphic overlay system boosted the 32x past everything available at the time.. Pushing the Genesis's color pallet from 64 colors on screen out of a pallet of 512 colors, to 32 thousand colors on screen out of a pallet of 1.6 million colors. On top of this it gave the Genesis something it never had before, the power to push Polygons! Unfortunately it could only do flat shaded polygons, but at the time it's only comptetion was Nintendo's SuperFX chip, which was nothing in comparison. And lastly, the 32x added true hardware Scaling, Rotation and Translating. This was something that the Genesis sorely lacked, especially when the Super Nintendo boasted it's "Mode 7" graphics so readily.

While being all this and then some, the 32x was doomed from the start. It was a technical marvel, however, it was poorly marketed and many people couldn't justify spending $150 on and upgrade to an aging system. 3rd party delevopers were weary of creating software for another Genesis add-on after the SEGA-CD had already failed in the market. This lead to only a handful of decent games that wern't played by enough people to truely be appreciated. SEGA quickly dropped support for the 32x and focused exclusivly on the SEGA Saturn which was release shortly after the 32x. The Saturn in return was a horrible failure also.

Amazingly, dispite lack of decent documentation, a few brave souls have succeeded in developing WORKING emulators for this system addition, so that these games can finally get the attention they deserve.
