![]() The Atari 2600 ahh.. the stuff memories are made of.. Wow.. The first home console I can remember.. Such fond memories of the simple things in life.. one digital joystick, one button, and large block characters that took up 1/4 of the screen and still looked blocky! Nothing like running around a series of multi color castles that all look the same, with your "knight" white square and trusty left arrow... err I mean sword. :) Nothing too special about this system now.. but in October of 1977 (the year I was born) it was the best thing in the world.. being one of the first home machines to use cartridges and the first console ever to use a CPU it took the world by storm, people paid upwards of 300 dollars for this marvel of technology! Originally when it was release only 10 games were to be developed for the system, Atari held this system so low in expectations that the first games that were release actually had 01 02 03 etc marked on the box. However, to their delight the system was an AMAZING success, the system lasted well beyond it's expected shelf life of 2-3 years. The last release of the 2600 console was in 1986, just shy of the 10 year mark. No console release since then has captured an audience for as long as the 2600.
Stella Absolutely, without a doubt, the best mix of Atari and Windows that money can't buy. Keeping with the spirit of emulation this emulator is completely FREE, but I would still use it even if there was a charge. This emulator takes me way back to the days of Hero, Mountain Kind, and Worm War I. I love it. Stella is available on the following Operating Systems: AcornOS, AmigaOS, FreeBSD, IRIX, Linux, OS/2, MacOS, OpenStep, Unix, and Windows But the one I have available to download is the Windows version, well, because that's the one I use.. :) So, if you have one of the other OS you'll have to visit the Stella website.
