Capcom introduced the CPS2 board system with the release of Super Street fighter 2 Turbo as a state-of-the-art arcade system that would save Operator & Manufacturing costs by having to buy only one "A" board (the motherboard) per cabinet, and then adding a "B" board (software) which could later be swapped for a new game/B board at much lower cost than what a whole new PCB would be. Both parts are encased in a plastic shell and clip together in one handy casing with easy to use connectors for your Jamma harness, Qsound wiring, and extra buttons where necessary. It is still being used today, with Vampire Saviour and Marvel vs. Capcom being most recent titles. Street fighter 3, however, uses a newer (and very expensive) setup that is totally different.
Capcom uses a color coding system to insure that the game would remain is it's designated market areas and to protect the game from being pirated.
There are 5 colors in the system Blue, Grey, Green, Orange, and Black.
Blue - English(USA/Europe)
Grey - English(Asia)
Green - Japanese
Orange - Spanish/Portuguese
Green and Blue "B" boards are comaptable with each other and can be played in the same "A" board.
The Gray and Orange are compatable in the same way.
However, Green or Blue boards are not compatable with Gray or Orange.
